Invocation

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and praise as you trust in Him so that you might overflow with hope by the power of The Holy Spirit

Hymn 586: All my hope on God is founded
tune: Michael, with Intro.

1. All my hope on God is founded;
he doth still my trust renew.
Me through change and chance he guideth,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.

2. Human pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray his trust;
what with care and toil he buildeth,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God's power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.

3. God's great goodness aye endureth,
deep his wisdom, passing thought:
splendour, light, and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore.

4. Daily doth th' Almighty giver
bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our soul delighteth,
pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand
at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.

5. Still from earth to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ his Son.
Christ doth call
one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall.

Prayer

Gracious loving God, once again we come to meet with you in this particularly special way, joined together as one in the fellowship of our church family. Our backgrounds are many and our experiences varied but for this short time of worship we share in our common purpose of offering to you our praise and adoration. You are the one true God who is worthy to be worshipped and we are conscious that except for the precious gift of Jesus that you have given to us we would have no place in Your Holy presence. It is in Him and through Him that we offer to you this act of worship and ask that as it flows from hearts filled with love and gratitude that you will find it pleasing and acceptable.
Forgive us, we pray, for the times when we have let ourselves and you down by failing to be everything you want us to be and failing to do all that you want us to do. Illuminate our sin father that through our personal confessions we can receive the forgiveness that we need in order to live at peace with you and the world in which you have called us to live work and serve.
Thank you Lord for the assurance that our repentance and confessions are always sufficient through which to experience the grace of your forgiveness and may we all be blessed as one in spirit with you and each other as we continue to share in this act of worship. May all that we say and do lead us once again to your throne of grace and we ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lords Prayer

Our Father, who art in Heaven.
Hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom come, your will be done
In earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever
Amen

Revelation 21: 1 - 5

Then I saw "a new heaven and a new earth," for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

2 Corinthians 5: 11 - 21

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are "out of our mind," as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Hymn (MP 254): I am a new creation
tune of same name, with Intro, sung 2x

I am a new creation,
No more in condemnation,
Here in the grace of God I stand.
My heart is overflowing,
My love just keeps on growing,
Here in the grace of God I stand.
I am a new creation,

And I will praise You Lord,
Yes, I will praise You Lord,
And I will sing of all that You have done.
A joy that knows no limit,
A lightness in my spirit,
Here in the grace of God I stand.

Sermon

In the last service we shared together we focussed on the necessity to be born again as the initial step on the Christian journey and today we consider the consequences of that step of faith.

Paul in his second letter to the Corinthian church directs us to an understanding of growing in Christ which is the natural follow on to the new birth as an essential aspect of what is entailed in this pilgrimage on which we have embarked. It is a continual process of growth about which a friend of mine used to say that if you stop growing you rust and if you rust you bust which I am sure that many backslidden Christians could testify too.

Conversion is intended to be a time of new beginnings, "If anyone is in Christ they are a new creation the old has gone, the new has come" says Paul. It is not about improvements or renovations but about recreation with a fresh start. Being in Christ is to be remade not cloned.

In the world of art there are many impressive prints of artistry but they are just copies a poor substitute. It is the originals that create a much greater interest and what we so often hear and see is that people are prepared to pay enormous, even obscene, amounts of money in order to get their hands on the original. When we are in Christ we are originals not just copies which puts quite a value on us.

There is in fact a purpose for being in Christ and that is to be reconciled but that is not only intended to be with God but also with one another. It is, in fact, an evangelistic ministry through which we become peacemakers and advocates of reconciliation amongst people. Even more importantly we are expected to encourage others also to be reconciled with God. The natural progression of people being reconciled to God is reconciliation with one another and that could make a vast difference to the society in which we live. In 2 Kings 10 vs. 15 we have a meeting between Jehoanadab and Jehu in which Jehu extends the greeting "If your heart is as my heart give me your hand". This lays a foundation for a lesson that we all can learn about relationships within the family of the church. A focus on our unity rather than divisions and all being part of the encouragement to be in Christ.

Growing is a natural part of human activity even though at a certain age we no longer grow taller but as we all know only too well we are not prevented from growing bigger. Our nails grow and contrary to popular belief my own hair continues to grow. What also should happen is that we are intended to grow in maturity by having greater perception, more understanding and a wider knowledge. It is no different in a spiritual sense and perhaps it is helpful to look at some of the ways in which we can do so.

Paul in writing to the Galatians (Chapter 5 vs.1) tells us to stand fast in liberty by which Christ has made us free. We are free to do just as we want but I like the little story about D. L. Moody. One day he shocked his congregation by announcing from the pulpit that he got drunk whenever he wanted. After waiting for the mutters of disbelief to ripple round the gathering he went on to say "the only thing is I never want too". In Christ we are also free to do whatever we like but, as Christians, it really should be more about what Jesus likes and wants.

In Jesus we see the very nature and character of God. He said of himself that the father was in Him and He was in the father (John 10 vs.30,37,38). In the same way that because He is in God so we, being in Christ, should also reflect his nature and character. This is not always easy and Paul himself said "The good that I would I do not but the evil that I would not is what I do". If Paul struggled there is hope for us. Our growth exercise, no matter how difficult that might be, is to become more like Jesus which means, for most if not all of us, there is still a great deal of growing to be done.

The totality of who and what Jesus is can be found in the reference to the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians chapter 5. Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness and Self Control described in scripture as singular not as fruits which is often referred to. It is a work of grace which no amount of determination and self effort can achieve and only available through the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross. It is the place in the Christian life that all roads lead too. Being in Christ begins there, continues from there and requires constantly returning there for a new beginning. It is a spiritual experience with spiritual reality that cannot be seen through the human eye but found only in the human heart. Continuing to grow will constantly necessitate going back to the cross as there is no place for sin in our relationship with God but he always has time for sinners.

There is also no separating the love of God from the love of Jesus and there is natural obedience which proved that to be the case. This really leads to one other means of growing in Christ and results from obedience to God's will for us. It is sometimes difficult to identify what God wants us to do or say and where he wants us to go but certainly reading , studying our bibles and spending time in prayer are extremely good ways to cultivate our relationship with Him and what He expects of us. Having been married for almost 47 years, my wife and I tend to know what each expects of the other which emanates from the relationship cultivated during the time of our marriage.

When we build up our relationship with God it becomes much easier to recognise what He is prompting us to do. It becomes more apparent when our response generates a sense of peace after we have done what we believe He expected of us. There may well be times when we lack that sense of peace when we have got it wrong and will need to go back to where things began to go wrong in order to get back on track being where God wants us to be doing what God wants us to do.

We are all different which God recognises and in consequence speaks to us and encourages us in ways that are suited to our own particular needs. However he can and only will do that if we are willing to recognise, listen and respond positively to his promptings because he never imposes his will on people. The ability to grow in Christ comes from getting to know God better and we can only do this by building up and strengthening our relationship with him by being in Christ which takes time and effort. Are we willing to make the sacrifices necessary to progress in continuing Christian growth or do we prefer to drift slowly backwards and like my friend said rust before we bust. The richness of what we have known and experienced can be gone before we know it if we are unwilling to move forward. As new creations in Christ there is freedom and renewal but there will be an expectation of obedience are we ready to pay the price? Amen

Prayer

Once again Lord we come before you recognising the generosity of your love towards us and all your creation. Despite the consequences of the pandemic which confront us we live in a spectacular world which you have created for our appreciation and benefit. This time of year brings a freshness to the natural world which surrounds us and as the crops in the fields begin to grow we are reminded of your faithfulness to your promise that as long as the earth remains there will always be seedtime and harvest.
We thank you for the inspiration and answer to our prayers that have led to early scientific development of the vaccines to combat the Covid 19 virus and we pray that this gift of vaccines might precipitate acknowledgement and gratitude for your intervention. We pray that there will be success in discovery of a cure that will bring an end to this pandemic.

Our thoughts turn to the needs of poorer countries and places like India and Brazil where the need for help and support is so desperate and ask that you will influence the hearts and minds of all in positions of authority to provide an urgent and compassionate response to those in need. Lord we thank you for modern technology which offers a spring board for early responses to those needs and we ask for your blessing on all that are homeless that suitable accommodation will be provided for them with a chance for hope and new beginnings. We also pray and be with those who have lost contact with other family members and for families where there is division and ask that there will be a place of compromise and willingness to work towards reconciliation.

For all you have provided a world of great beauty it is so often marred by suspicion, selfishness and greed. Lord we pray that your Holy Spirit will be particularly active in this age and generation bringing conviction of sin and repentance that will lead to changed lives and people living with the confidence that they are indeed new creations.

We give thanks for the fellowship and family of this church and ask for your guidance and help as we confront the challenges that lay ahead. Sometimes we find it difficult to know how we can achieve all that needs to be done but you are a great and glorious God who is still on the throne. Father encourage your people in this church family and by some miracle provide the funds that will be needed to address the property issues and financial demands resulting from the pandemic. Bless, inspire and help our congregation in the difficult days that lay ahead and may our confidence grow from the assurance that if we ask anything in the Saviours name that it will be done and therefore in Jesus name we pray. Amen

Hymn 576: God's spirit is deep in my heart
tune: Go tell everyone, with Intro.

1. God's spirit is deep in my heart;
he has called me and set me apart;
and this is what I have to do-
what I have to do:

He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
tell blind people that they can see,
and set the downtrodden free,
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that the kingdom of God has come;
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that God's kingdom has come.

2. And just as the Father sent me,
so I'm sending you out to be
my witness throughout the world-
the whole of the world:

He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
tell blind people that they can see,
and set the downtrodden free,
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that the kingdom of God has come;
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that God's kingdom has come.

3. Don't carry a load in your pack;
you don't need two shirts on your back;
a workman can earn his own keep-
can earn his own keep:

He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
tell blind people that they can see,
and set the downtrodden free,
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that the kingdom of God has come;
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that God's kingdom has come.

4. Don't worry what you have to say;
don't worry, because on that day
God's spirit will speak in your heart-
will speak in your heart:

He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
tell blind people that they can see,
and set the downtrodden free,
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that the kingdom of God has come;
and go tell ev'ryone
the news that God's kingdom has come.
